THE GOLDEN GLOVES STORY in BRITISH COLUMBIA - By Brian W. Zelley
Flashing through the decades, it all began in 1939 when BC boxing began their own Golden Gloves story.
Now there are many forgotten names to recall from the first ten years such as boxers Art Burgess
Bus Lindsay, Chester Orr, Earl Cook, Jackie Turner, Jimmie Crook, Phil Vickery, Terry Doyle,
Vic Murdoch and many more.
In the early years it was hosted by the Vancouver Active Club and sponsored by the "Vancouver Sun".
Also some of the competitors would travel to Seattle for their brand of Golden Gloves with some of the
Canadian Seattle Golden Gloves champions being the likes of Lyle Kehoe, Freddie Steele, Norm Dawson,
Gprdie Grayson and more.
The year 2010 also marks 50 years - a golden gloves anniversary of Esquimalt boxer ALAN CURTIS
winning the big prize - The 1960 "The Golden Boy" award. Over the following years, he was joined by the likes of Freddy Fuller, Dick Findlay, Ray Lampkin, Neil Knight and many more.
The year 2010 will also be the place where the Golden Gloves will start a new age with activity being in the Greater Victoria area on April 16 and 17th. The early buzz is the possibility of GEORGE CHUVALO
being a guest. THe show will be hosted jointly by the "Capital City Boxing Club" and Boxing BC
and is expected to have a number of the BC Golden Gloves alumni in attendance,
For those that don't GO they can't be part of the SHOW, but one key objective for boxing fans,
fighters, coaches, officials and volunteers is to make this event as great as the old
BC Diamond Belt tournament or better still, greater - It will require support throughout
the Province and beyond - this is our time to shine a new bright light on amateur boxing
on the Golden Gloves on Canadian boxing and glory days of past happenings on Vancouver Island.
