Here is just a little bit of info on why Pacquiao and this weight issue helps point out that he can never truly be considered one of the "All time greats".
This is what the true All Time Great accomplished.... without catch weights:
Sugar Ray Robinson went undefeated in 85 amateur fights, with the majority of these coming by knockout. Robinson turned pro as a tall, thin welter weight, yet he was so good he would frequently fight some of the best middleweights, typically giving up 12 or more pounds. In his first 132 fights (yes that is correct) he was defeated only ONCE and that was by Jake LaMotta at MIDDELWEIGHT. In that loss LaMatta outweighed Robinson by 16 1/2lbs!!!! A difference Pacman wouldn't dare dream of trying to emulate. Robinson then went on to beat LaMotta 5 times, 4 of those times while still weighing in as a WELTERWEIGHT for the MIDDLEWEIGHT fights. The last of those five was for the Middleweight Championship in the fight that is now commonly known as "The St. Valentines Massacre". Robinson then came within 2 rounds of taking the Light Heavyweight title from Joey Maxim while being outweighed by more than 15lbs. The reason he lost was heat exhaustion from fighting at such a pace under 104 degree temperatures that he built up a lead that Maxim was not going to over come. The bright lights did Robinson in, not the weight advantage. Now ask yourself, Why does Pacquiao who Roach considers the best of our time, INSIST on all these advantages and steps to insure he has an opponent who does not have the benefit of coming in at his (in this case Cotto/Mosley) best condition to fight for the title? Does that sound like an all time great? Not in my book, not in the history books and not in any reality no matter how anyone tries to twist it.
Pacquaio deserves no place to be called POUND FOR POUND the best when he in fact is refusing to prove the VERY DEFINITION of what a POUND FOR POUND Champion does. In this case Sugar Ray Robinson, the boxer that POUND FOR POUND was first brought into boxing discussions.
Let Pacquiao, Arum, Roach make these catch weights, let Cotto or Mosley break and give in for the money, but be clear, it takes Pacquiao out of consideration for EVER being called the Greatest of this or any other time.
* if anyone wants to dispute the Robinson facts listed, I'd be happy to point out the countless sources of reference.
